Le Massif de Charlevoix, one of eastern Canada’s marquee ski destinations, says it may be forced to shut down operations for the season if it fails to reach a labor agreement with its unionized workforce by January 20. In a statement released by the resort Saturday, resort management said continuing to operate without a finalized agreement could prevent the mountain from meeting its service and safety standards. If it is unable to operate the mountain at full capacity under adequate conditions, it will have no choice but to close.

Negotiations are ongoing between Groupe Le Massif and the Syndicat des travailleuses et travailleurs du Massif, which represents roughly 300 employees and is affiliated with the CSN labor federation. The previous collective agreement expired on December 31, and wage increases remain one of the main unresolved issues.

A conciliator asked both sides on Friday to submit additional information that could help reach a settlement before the January 20 deadline, CTV News reports. Management said it expects the proposed settlement framework to be presented to employees for a vote as soon as possible. If it is rejected, arbitration remains an option.

Union leaders responded in a bulletin to members, saying the proposal does not adequately recognize the value of employees’ work and criticizing what they described as the employer’s use of pressure tactics rather than compromise. In addition to wages, the union is seeking changes related to subcontracting, sick leave, workplace safety, and vacation policies.

Union members have been invited to attend a special general meeting to review the proposal and vote, though a date has not yet been announced. Both the union and resort management declined to comment further, reports CTV News. If negotiations fail, a closure would end the 2025-26 season at Le Massif de Charlevoix, one of Quebec’s flagship ski areas located along the St. Lawrence River northeast of Quebec City.
