Both Germany and France announced new a nationwide lockdown on Wednesday, throwing the only-just-begun ski season into disarray as ski resorts have been forced to close.
In France, President Emmanuel Macron announced the second lockdown in France that will begin on Friday, until December 1st. Germany has entered a four-week shutdown of restaurants, bars, cinemas, theaters, and other leisure facilities in a bid to slow the sharp rise in coronavirus infections.

The decision means that ski areas in France will be closed, or won’t open, in November. Open resorts Tignes and Les 2 Alpes have been forced to close, having only recently opened for the 20/21 season. Val Thorens and Val d’Isere have had to postpone their openings to December.
There were no ski areas open in Germany, although those that were planning on a November opening will have to postpone that. Chancellor Merkel asked people don’t make unnecessary journeys, adding that hotels won’t accommodate people on tourist trips.
Cervinia in Italy was this week forced to close by the government after only being open for a day. Viral images of crowding and lift-lines prompted the snap decision.
