The best tide for the right at Mawi, Lombok is just before or just after low tide. I showed up a while before low tide today and the waves were messy, lumpy, thick and unimpressive. Then the tide dropped into the money zone and the waves started firing. The swell direction wasn’t perfect for the right, but it wasn’t bad. The left was working as well, but I didn’t try one.
Waves were consistently around head high today. There were the classic Indo double overhead sets that would clean everyone up, but they didn’t have much shape. Close outs mostly.
The big news flash for me today is that the road is now 100% paved from Kuta, Lombok to Mawi. That road used to be much more challenging than the surfing… Now, it’s a breeze.
This may likely translate to more surfers, unfortunately. The line up had about 20 guys in it during the best part of the tide, but everyone was cool and mellow. I stuck to the right and had to take a decent amount of outside sets on the head, but only a few guys were surfing the right.
The water is hot right now along with the air. Water temp likely around 86F and air about the same.
The forecast for the Mawi area looks like it’ll stay the same size as today all week. Which is in the 4-7 foot range. Which is great for me as I haven’t surfed since November.
