The skiing at Mammoth yesterday was fast, chilly, and fun.  Cool temps and moderate winds gave skiers & riders a taste of winter in late May.  Clouds loomed on the horizon all day, then a short snow squall set down on the mountain in the afternoon.

The most exciting thing that happened at Mammoth yesterday might have been the announcement that Mammoth will stay open indefinitely (or at least until Broadway melts out).

The best skiing we found on the mountain was Cornice.  Cornice is a groomed run off the saddle between the gondola and chair 23 on the top of the mountain.  In the morning, everything was pretty icy and loud, but Cornice had soft shaved ice in the middle of the run starting at 9am.

Not many people on the hill plus fast snow equaled some fun high speed groomers at Mammoth yesterday.  Anything off the groomers was pretty hard and chunky.

Cornice laps proceeded for about 2 hours before we decided to call it a day and begin the long trek from Mammoth back to the Bay Area.

On our drive home we saw how Tioga Pass and Sonora Pass were doing.  The Dana Plateau is still holding snow in the couloirs, but you’d be hiking out the entire lower section.  For me, I’d say the Dana Plateau lines are over.  Some might still go for it, though.

It was a great weekend at Mammoth.  We’re fired up they’re staying open and I now remember why Mammoth is the place to be in spring.

Yeah, it snowed on us over Sonora Pass yesterday.

  1. Skinned out to Greeley Lake just past Saddle Bag lake off Tioga Pass. The gate to the lake is open, making the skin in only about 2 mi or so until you start to reach some fun little lines. Camped at the far side of the lake for a couple days and had a blast, nice and soft come late morning until mid/late afternoon.

    Go get some!
