We awoke today in Mammoth to a ripping wind.  The mountain was reporting 50-70mph winds at the top.  But a quick trip up the gondola revealed that it was actually much windier at the bottom of the mountain than at the top.

Strong winds at the base meant that the park remained empty most of the day.

The upper mountain, however, wasn’t nearly windy.  The groomers off the top were soft by 9:30 and the off piste was fun by 10:30am.

We spent most of the day lapping Chair 23 or doing top-to-bottom upper mountain runs off the gondola.  Right now you can still ski 3,000 vertical feet at Mammoth (and anytime they’re open).  It’s great to get that kind of vert in the springtime without having to hike for it.

But we did do some hiking today as well.  The short hike to the Paranoids from Chair 23 was well worth the effort.  In the Paranoids were very few tracks and it skied like soft, smooth, backcountry snow.

Mammoth is open for one more week and it’s gonna be a good one.  Memorial day weekend is gonna be a blast down here.
