One of American ski racing’s most important developmental events is headed back to Mammoth Mountain, California. U.S. Ski and Snowboard announced today, September 3, that Mammoth will host the 2027 Toyota U.S. Alpine Championships from March 31 to April 7. For seven days of competition, the nation’s top elite and developing ski racers will take to the California resort for a chance to be crowned National Champions and earn a spot on the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team to compete in international events.
The 2027 U.S. Alpine Championships mark Mammoth’s first time hosting the event since 2005. Since its founding in 1974, Mammoth Mountain’s Race Department has hosted a range of alpine racing, including World Cups, NorAm Cups, and U.S. Alpine Masters National Championships. The return of the U.S. Alpine Championships adds another notable event to that history.
“Hosting the best young racers from around the country is a natural fit for the California resort, and the return of downhill makes the event even more special for racers and fans alike,” U.S. Ski and Snowboard wrote in its press release. In the press release, the American ski association describes the event as “the pinnacle of alpine skiing competition in the United States.”
The U.S. Alpine Championships draw established racers as well as emerging talent, who are working toward the World Cup level. It acts as a bridge between developmental racing and the international circuit, and performance at the event weighs into selection criteria for the U.S. Ski and Snowboard Team for the upcoming season. It also gives younger skiers a chance to race against more established competition, with strong results serving as a marker of progress rather than a guarantee of a World Cup future.
The Championships also carry some weight for skiers already competing on the World Cup circuit. FIS points are on the line, and stronger finishes can improve a skier’s national ranking, which in turn can help secure better start positions in future elite races.
Four disciplines of racing will take place at this year’s event: downhill, slalom, giant slalom, and super-G. According to U.S. Ski and Snowboard’s announcement, 2027 will mark the first time downhill has been included since the 2021 U.S. Alpine Championships in Aspen.
“We are so excited to come back to Mammoth Mountain for this year’s Toyota U.S. Alpine Championships presented by Stifel,” Stifel U.S. Ski Team Alpine Development Director Chip Knight said in the team’s press release. “The alpine national championships is a big race series for many up-and-coming athletes, and we could not be more thrilled that Mammoth Mountain will also be bringing a true downhill into the event program.”
The return of the U.S. Alpine Championships to Mammoth Mountain adds another event to the resort’s Race Department history. When athletes descend on the mountain in spring 2027, they’ll be racing for points, selection, and a chance to measure themselves against some of the country’s best — with an eye toward what comes next in their careers.
Additional details, including the event schedule, ticketing, and athlete fields, will be announced by U.S. Ski and Snowboard in the coming months.
