The man was trying to climb a steep, near-vertical side of a hill on Wednesday afternoon when his snowmobile upended and fell on top of him, the Steamboat Pilot reports.
One of the man’s friends, who witnessed the accident, managed to pull the sled off of him and start CPR within two minutes of the accident. The victim, whose name and hometown have not been released, was wearing a helmet and avalanche backpack.
First responders received a call just before 1 pm about a snowmobile crash near Dry Lake Campground, according to Lt. Ryan Adrian with the Routt County Sheriff’s Office. Routt County Coroner Rob Ryg also responded and confirmed the impact of the sled falling on the man is what killed him.
