As the ski patrol strike at Telluride Ski Resort continues with no clear end date, the impact is rippling through Colorado’s ski community. With Telluride closed since December 27 following stalled contract negotiations, both local workers and visiting skiers have been left scrambling during one of the busiest times of the season. In response, Monarch Mountain has stepped in with a generous offer aimed at keeping people skiing while supporting those affected.

Monarch Mountain announced in a social media post that Telluride employees and their dependents are eligible for up to three complimentary lift tickets. In addition, guests with a valid Telluride season pass or proof of a Telluride day ticket purchased between December 29 and January 8 can receive free skiing at Monarch as well. According to the ski area, impacted guests may receive up to one complimentary ticket per day, for a maximum of three days, through January 8, 2026. Monarch emphasized its motivation in a statement, saying it “cares deeply about our ski community and is glad to open our doors to help keep winter plans on track.”

Located near Salida, Colorado, roughly a three-hour drive from Telluride, Monarch Mountain offers a smaller, more independent alternative with nine lifts and 1,146 acres of skiable terrain. Despite a slow snow year across much of Colorado, Monarch has managed to keep a solid portion of its terrain open without the help of snowmaking, relying entirely on natural snowfall. Recent storms have started to improve conditions, and at last report, more than half of the mountain’s trails were open. Monarch’s highly anticipated No Name Basin expansion remains closed for now but could open later in the season if snowfall cooperates.

Beyond the free tickets, Monarch has also highlighted its Migration Ticket, which allows passholders from other resorts to purchase a discounted $69 lift ticket. While not directly tied to the Telluride situation, it underscores Monarch’s reputation as a locals favorite that often finds creative ways to welcome visiting skiers.

The timing of Monarch’s offer comes as Telluride faces mounting pressure. The Telluride Professional Ski Patrol Association has said the strike stems from the need for a wage structure that supports long term attraction and retention, while Telluride Ski Resort maintains it has offered livable and sustainable wages. Meanwhile, the closure has already affected the local economy, with short term rental bookings reportedly dropping sharply year over year.

For those impacted by the Telluride closure, Monarch Mountain is providing a rare bright spot during a frustrating stretch. Skiers are encouraged to check Monarch’s website or call the resort directly at 719-530-5000 for the most up to date details, as offers are subject to change. For now, Monarch’s move stands as a strong example of how independent ski areas can support the broader ski community when it matters most.
