Snowmobiler Triggered and Caught in ‘Monster Avalanche’ Near Cooke City, MT

A snowmobiler triggered and was caught in an avalanche near Cooke City, MT on Saturday, according to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center.

The man was uninjured despite his snowmobile getting “trashed” by the 2-4-foot-deep hard-slab avalanche.

Pictures don’t do this monster avalanche justice. We helped the kid recover his sled, which was buried between 4and 10 feet. luckily it wasn’t him and no one was hurt…

The slide was one of four reported near Cooke City on Saturday. The avalanche center said these slides “broke on weak layers below a couple feet of snow that fell last week.”

Avalanche danger in the area is listed as “considerable”, and the avalanche center advises snowmobiler’s avoid riding on and underneath steep slopes.
