Cold temperatures and lake effect snowfall have finally reached the Midwest, and Michigan’s famous Mount Bohemia is set to begin its season on December 6. The Mitten State’s northernmost ski resort plans to have at least nine runs open, with its frontside chairlift spinning on both Saturday and Sunday. Early-season conditions are expected with hidden stumps, so caution is advised. Mount Bohemia’s $99 season pass sale will run through December 6.
Mount Bohemia is located high in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and features glade runs and powder that are unmatched in the Midwest. With a 900-foot vertical drop, it blows many other resorts in the region out of the water. The mountain’s backcountry-style terrain offers an experience that rivals the Rocky Mountains. While Mount Bohemia may have only two chairlifts, it spans 620 acres of skiable terrain across eight unique sections, making it one of the largest ski resorts in the Midwest.

Mount Bohemia takes a different approach to building its base: it runs on pure, 100% natural snowfall. There are no artificial snow guns at the mountain, but its annual snowfall average of 273 inches makes up for that. So far this year, Mount Bohemia has received 31 inches of fresh snowfall, with more on the way, helping crews continue to open more runs as the weather permits.
Mount Bohemia is home to some of the most extreme terrain in North America, requiring that you be an advanced skier or snowboarder to explore the resort. It only has black diamond and double black diamond runs, except for a select few blue runs. Mount Bohemia adds to this challenge by not grooming any runs throughout the season, furthering the resort’s reputation as a resort only for the seasoned skier.
The resort has been exploring its options to make it more friendly for non-expert riders. It recently cut a new low-angle glade, giving non-expert riders more opportunities to develop the skills required to explore the rest of Mount Bohemia’s unrelenting terrain.

The mountain offers a variety of pass options. Mount Bohemia has a $112 season pass with no blackout dates, as well as a $99 season pass that excludes Saturdays, both of which go off sale on December 6. Day passes are available for $95, but the resort will not sell them on Saturdays to limit lift lines.
As the snow continues to fall across the Midwest, the winter stoke has finally arrived in Michigan. Mount Bohemia is synonymous with Michigan skiing, and its opening day is the perfect announcement to Michiganders that the most exciting time of the year has arrived.
