Mount Cheeseman is set to kick off its 2026 winter season on Thursday, July 30, becoming one of the latest New Zealand ski fields to open this year after a slow start to the season. However, an incoming weather system forecast for Thursday and Friday, July 30-31, could make for a challenging opening, with the club field urging visitors on social media to check daily mountain reports before traveling.
Despite the lean early-season snowpack, the mountain says it is ready to welcome skiers and snowboarders. Coverage remains limited across much of the ski area, with groomed terrain currently confined to trails on either side of the Main T-Bar. The learner area, however, is reported to be in excellent condition, and management says additional terrain will be opened progressively as snowfall and conditions improve. The mountain is reminding visitors to ski and ride cautiously due to the thin cover, stay in control at all times, and obey all trail closures and instructions from mountain staff.
The forecast isn’t entirely gloomy. While the approaching storm may impact lift operations on Thursday and Friday, current forecasts suggest Sunday is shaping up to be the standout day of the opening weekend.
Mount Cheeseman will operate from Thursday, July 30, through Sunday, August 2, before closing Monday through Wednesday as part of its planned early-season operating schedule. The ski field is scheduled to reopen on Thursday, August 6, with operating dates for the remainder of August to be announced later.

Visitors should note that, in line with Mt. Cheeseman’s 2026 operating plan, no rental equipment or ski lessons will be available this winter. Guests requiring rental gear are advised to arrange equipment in Christchurch before travelling to the mountain.
Off the slopes, Cockayne Café will be open throughout the weekend, serving coffee, beverages, and a growing selection of food as stock levels build.
For those wanting to stay on the mountain, Snowline Lodge will also be operating Thursday through Saturday nights, offering its popular dinner, bed and breakfast accommodation packages.
Mountain management says it is looking forward to welcoming guests back and officially getting the 2026 season underway, provided Mother Nature cooperates.
Skiers and riders are encouraged to check Mount Cheeseman’s morning snow report before departing, as weather, road access, lift operations, and available terrain may change rapidly with the incoming storm.
