Report from February 9-10, 2025

After a glorious (and grueling) week of nonstop storms at Mt. Bachelor, Oregon, Sunday and Monday provided a glimpse of the famed Central Oregon sunshine. After a week that delivered feet of snow to hungry powder chasers, these days were an opportunity to capitalize on great visibility and views of the surrounding volcanoes.

The Summit Express chairlift is open, allowing 360-degree drops from the top of Bend, Oregon’s favorite local volcano. With the opening, riders began dropping east, to the catchline leading back to the Cloudchaser Express, or west to wrap around to the Northwest Express.

Notably, some folks went to Mt. Bachelor on Sunday not to use the chairlift, but instead to participate in Vertfest.ย Vertfest is a celebration of uphill travel and skimo, sponsored by the Central Oregon Avalanche Center, Pomoca, Folkrm, Black Diamond, Blackstrap, Crux Fermentation, Mountain Supply of Oregon, and many others. Nearly one hundred athletes participated and the results were impressive, with many covering thousands of vertical feet in less than two hours.

The next few days feature some cold and clear weather before snow returns this weekend.
