Report for Thursday, December 25, 2025
Usually, the ski season in the Pacific Northwest kicks off around Thanksgiving.
Not this season, which is perplexing given it is supposed to be a La NiƱa year, which typically brings huge snowfall to the area.
It’s been incredibly frustrating waiting for enough snow to hit the slopes.
I rarely go skiing on Christmas Day as we typically have other family plans.
However, this year, of all, was the year to do it.
Mt. Bachelor had just opened for the season two days prior; one of its latest openings ever.

The snow report on Christmas morning showed one inch of new snow with four lifts open including the Pine Marten and Skyliner Express lifts.
Lets go!!!
My whole family (plus my cousin) got up to the mountain in time to jump on Pine Marten Express at 9:15 a.m.
There were no lines, and it was still snowing.
The snow quality, base depth, and overall conditions far exceeded my expectations.
In fact, despite the obvious signs a still low snowpack, it felt like a normal mid-winter day.

We did a few runs around Olympian and Thunderbird before heading over to Skyliner Express and hitting just about every open run.Ā
We even found what my boys described as “powder stashes.”
We grabbed lunch in the West Village lodge and when we headed back out for the afternoon, we were greeted with a nice surprise: it had stopped snowing, and the skies were clearing.Ā
We enjoyed the afternoon in much the same way as the morning, just with better visibility.

We took our last run of the day down Leeway around 2:30 p.m. and skied right to our front row parking spot.Ā
We got back to our house in Sunriver in plenty of time to make dinner, open presents, and play board games.
What a great Christmas.
I might need to make this an annual thing.
