Mt. Baker is open and there were lots of smiles, snow and shredding to be had yesterday for opening day (December 20, 2014)!  It was a little crowded but what opening day isn’t?  Especially when Washington has had to wait so long to get the goods.  Baker had 7″ of new snow yesterday, 14″ in the last 48 hours and 23″ storm total of new since Thursday.  The Heather Meadows base total is now 30″ and Pan Dome has 45″.  Conditions permitting, more operations will open by Monday so the steeps can get filled in and things can settle after the storm.  It is still early season but hey, some lifts are spinning!  Limited operation with chairs 1, 2, 3 and the Heather Meadows handle tow is in operation near the upper Heather Meadows base area.

Saturday was snowing and packed powder on the slopes, pretty good for day one although a little sparse.  Definitely pockets of powder if you could get there early enough. Sunday was a little rain affected and overall a little wet but cooled down and things are looking up for us in the PNW.  Aside from a little rain overnight and Sunday morning, the forecast is calling for more snow the rest of the week!  Definitely bring your rock skis/boards this week as early season hazards do exists.  Hopefully Santa will continue to deliver and we can all have a Merry Whitemas and use that new gear AFTER the holidays.  Fingers crossed!

*NWAC is calling for sketchy conditions in the backcountry so stay safe out there.
