It’s been a season of late starts and early endings at Mt. Hood Meadows, Oregon, and now the resort has confirmed it will wrap up operations on April 12—earlier than hoped.

In a message shared on social media with its guests, the resort pointed to the simple reality: there just isn’t enough snow left to sustain daily operations. Crews have been working “day and night” to maintain terrain, but with limited coverage and spring conditions accelerating, the mountain is becoming increasingly difficult to keep open.

The early closure comes on the heels of an unusually delayed start to the season. Meadows didn’t open until December 23, marking its latest opening day in 30 years—surpassing the previous record of December 22, 2014. That opening came with limited terrain, reduced lift access, and shorter operating hours, as the snowpack struggled to support full operations from the outset.

While closing dates at Meadows typically stretch later into April, and in stronger years — like last season — can push into early May, this season has trended in the opposite direction from start to finish. Despite the tricky conditions, the resort struck a grateful tone in its announcement, thanking skiers and riders who showed up throughout the winter. “Low tide days still turned into great days because of this community,” the resort wrote.

A few end-of-season staples will still go ahead, including the Banked Slalom and Mazot Fest, giving locals a chance to close things out on a high note. However, the annual pond skim and Pride celebrations have been canceled due to insufficient snow coverage.

Meadows also noted that while April 12 is the planned closing day, there is a slim possibility of extending the season if a significant storm cycle materializes. Still, that would require consistent snowfall and a favorable forecast — something the resort acknowledged is unlikely at this stage.
