Day two of the 50th Anniversary of the National Brotherhood of Skiers kicked off February 5th in Vail, Colorado. Once again, SnowBrains was on the scene for the NBS opening ceremony. Just when you thought it couldn’t get any more festive, the NBS opening ceremony took it to a whole new level.

Total town takeover! As I parked my car in the structure and walked over to Solaris, I could already hear the beat to “We Are Family” by Sister Sledge. More towards the center of the Four Seasons, the song was accompanied by singing, clapping, and whistles. In the heart of Vail Village, I saw dozens of Black ski clubs lined up from Solaris past the international bridge. There was a DJ on the top deck of the Solaris center. I got to the scene right as the event started to kick off, and by the time I left, I was zig-zagging my way through a crowd of onlookers.

A procession of skiing families. The Town of Vail created a runway down the middle of the town, stretching from almost the ski hill to the Four Seasons at Solaris. Groups of ski clubs lined up with a banner before each group. As each club made its way up to the front, the DJ would announce the club’s name, play a song, and the group would break out into music and dance as the crowd joined them.

The opening ceremony celebrated each club, large and small, and the ability to unite with a common goal. Already, this event is shaping up to be one of the highlights of the ’22-’23 season.

SnowBrains will be at the event all week long. If you missed the first day of activities, check out our coverage of the Welcome Party.
