A new scholarship has been established in the Tetons to honor the life and legacy of Max Martin, a 33-year-old professional skier and community leader who passed away in January 2026. The Max Martin Memorial Scholarship is designed to eliminate the “impossible choice” young athletes often face between elite competitive skiing and premier local education.
Max Martin was a homegrown talent who rose through the ranks of the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club to become a Division I NCAA racer and a professional athlete featured in major ski films. Despite his success, Martin famously had to leave Jackson Hole as a teenager to attend an out-of-state ski academy to reach his full potential. This scholarship serves as the fulfillment of his wish to provide a world-class path for athletes to stay rooted in their home community.
The award offers a rare, comprehensive dual-support system, covering full tuition at the Jackson Hole Community School (JHCS) and the total costs of competitive training and racing through the Jackson Hole Ski & Snowboard Club (JHSC). The program focuses on the Jackson Hole Community School due to its specialized infrastructure for student-athletes. With a 1:6 student-teacher ratio and individualized scheduling, the institution allows students to maintain a rigorous academic load while accommodating the travel and training demands of the winter season.
Candidates for the scholarship are expected to mirror the character traits Martin was known for: a “relentless force of positivity,” humility, and a high level of drive. Requirements include a minimum 3.0 GPA and a proven commitment to reaching the highest echelons of competitive skiing.
“He was always going out of his way to make other people feel good.”

By funding both the classroom and the mountain, the scholarship ensures that financial barriers do not prevent the next generation of Teton athletes from achieving the same level of excellence that defined Max Martin’s career. Information on how to apply can be found one the scholarship’s website.
