NOAA: Blizzard Warning for Tahoe & Mammoth, CA | 4-8 FEET of Snow Forecast by Tuesday

The National Weather Service has issued a Blizzard Warning and a Winter Storm Warning for California. The Blizzard Warning is in effect from 12:00am pst tonight – 10:00pm Monday night. The Winter Storm Warning is in effect until 4:00pm Tuesday afternoon.

This is only the 6th Blizzard Warning that has been issued in the Sierra Nevada since 2008.

                                                       ***Blizzard Warning***

A Blizzard Warning has been issued for the Sierra from midnight tonight through 10pm Monday. Dangerous and life threatening blizzard conditions are likely in the Sierra. Multiple feet of snowfall are expected. Strong winds will produce zero visibility in whiteout conditions along with high drifting snow. Do not attempt to travel as first responders may not be able to rescue you. Even a short walk could be deadly if you become disoriented. Avalanche danger will remain high.

Snow levels are forecasted to drop down to 1,000ft – 2000ft on Monday. 

The 6-10 day outlook calls for above average precipitation and below average temperatures in California.

* CHANGES...Blizzard Warning issued.

* WHAT...Heavy snow with blizzard conditions expected. Additional
  snow accumulations of 2 to 5 feet at lake level, with 4 to 8
  feet above 7000 feet expected. Snow drifts could be deeper than
  10 feet. Winds gusting as high as 50 mph this afternoon through
  Monday with gusts to 100 mph over ridges.

* WHERE...Greater Lake Tahoe Area.

* WHEN...For the Winter Storm Warning, until 4 PM PST Tuesday.
  For the Blizzard Warning, from midnight tonight to 10 PM PST
  Monday.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Travel will be dangerous and could be
  impossible. Snowfall rates and winds will create periods of zero
  visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact commutes
  through the entire warning period. Strong winds could cause tree
  and powerline damage.
