Nordic Valley near Eden, Utah, shut down indefinitely last Wednesday due to rain and dwindling snowpack, but has now announced plans to reopen this coming weekend after a multi-day snowstorm will slam the Beehive State. The resort that normally boasts 300+ inches of the Greatest Snow on Earth annually has so far only received 15 inches.

Nordic Valley is located just half an hour east of Ogden in the northern Wasatch Mountains. It is considered the more affordable and family-friendly alternative to nearby Powder Mountain and Snowbasin Resorts.

Originally designed as an outdoor summer retreat on a 900-acre ranch, locals who had started using it to sled in the winter convinced the owner to install a t-bar. In 1968 Nordic Valley operated for the first time adding two new chairlifts by the 1970 season and becoming a local favorite.

For 50 years, Nordic Valley operated just 200 acres of skiable terrain on the front face with two double chairlifts and a triple. In 2020 a 6-person express lift was added bringing total skiable terrain to over 500 acres with a total vertical of 1,695 feet. There are 40 total runs consisting of 8 green, 12 blue, 15 black, and 5 double black. Nordic Valley also has night skiing on the main face which it plans to expand in the next few seasons.

Though this year has been historically bad for snow across the West, the forecasts do seem to favor a colder and snowier end of the season—a trend that’s becoming seemingly more common in today’s changing climate. In Utah, temperatures have already dropped and precipitation is in the forecast.

For more information about current conditions and trip-planning, Nordic Valley is posting updates on its website.
