The SR-20 North Cascades Highway, WA at 5,477-feet will reopen at 9 am today, Thursday, April 18th, according to WSDOT.

The agency closes the 37-mile (59-kilometer) scenic route every winter when weather, snow conditions and avalanche danger pose a threat to drivers and maintenance crews. It’s been closed since Nov. 28. Typically, the road reopens in May.

Crews still have a bit of work to finish, but WSDOT says this is the earliest opening since 2015, and they will have the road connecting the Skagit and Methow valleys open in time for lowland fishing season and Winthrop’s ’49er Days. The highway will remain open until around Thanksgiving when avalanche dangers cause its closure during the winter months.

Great work by the maintenance crews on both the east and west sides of the pass.
