Report from August 30 through September 2, 2025
Fresh snow saves the day, week, and month at Ohau Snowfields in New Zealand.

Ohau has been graced with just shy of a foot of freshies over the past, say, 60 hours.

To be clear, the recent front is far from a powder Valhalla. Wind transport, plus a semi-bulletproof base, makes for a shifting, layered snowscape at Ohau. But a top-up is a top-up.
Ask any seasoned veteran of the Mackenzie; this is Southern Alps carving at its most-classic.

As is commonly the case, the Ridge is where it’s ‘at’ when snow dancing at Ohau Snowfields. Day by day these beautiful faces only become more snow-fat.

To arrive to the goods is a trek, literally as well as figuratively, but it’s worth it—which applies to a visit to Ohau Snowfields, generally.
