Report from 26-27 September, 2025
Sing it to the rafters, never count New Zealand out.
Ohau Snowfields and Mackenzie Southern Alps, generally, rollicked amongst more than a foot of fresh powder snow—to conclude their commercial operations for the season.

The extended forecast had painted the picture. Mother Nature delivered. Locals rocked up in giddy droves to ride the proverbial wave.

Counterintuitive though it reads, the same elements common to closing a ski field in New Zealand are strangely also known to produce the very best days, which earn them their prestige. And shred-brothers and sisters, Ohau Snowfields just enjoyed two classics, back-to-back.

At this stage in the report, the Writer assures the reading rider: there are places where Powder Snow matters less.
Yes, a fatty storm dollop makes anywhere more rideable. But there exist far fewer places that safeguard the soul of riding, even when the snowpack is malnourished.
Ohau Snowfields is one such shelter from the bottom line.

Dry spell, or high tide; what matters more is what the riders bring to the mix.

Pending weather, backcountry tomfoolery will stretch through October. For now, we’re all thankful for this closing weekend at Ohau Snowfields.
