Belief brought results for skiers and snowboarders at Ohau Snowfields, New Zealand.

The ‘Time’ was right this past weekend. As forecasted. a 48-hour storm cycle injected a vital top-up of winter into the Southern Alps on the South Island of New Zealand.

The crazy thing was, despite all the waiting for a snowstorm to arrive, hardly anybody showed up for the harvest.

For the whole of the day following a storm, Ohau Snowfields was covered in powder snow, and virtually empty of riders.

How could this be?

Well, for one thing, the view through the webcams did a primo job of under-promising. 

For the few snow chasers who turned up early, the happenstance of private powder snow encapsulates perfects the magic of skiing and snowboarding New Zealand. With a whip of a Nor’Wester, seemingly average scenarios can (and commonly do) turn all-time.

The entire Ohau section of the range received a healthy addition to its snowpack. That said, ‘shark season’ is still absolutely in full effect.

It’s understood among locals, riders are wise to still take care. But that also enhances the draw for the thrill seeker. Whichever the intention, be assured there is something for everyone at Ohau Snowfields.

Currently, the snowpack is a spreadable, heavyish layer. The snow may be deceptively not deep in sections. But this latest installment of winter has provided good cover which next snowfalls will build upon, and across a wide area. The ski-heavy moisture has made it the perfect set-up snow for the season still ahead.

The vibe around the valleys is, ride what winter provides. We could not agree more.
