One Killed in Avalanche in Wyoming Yesterday | 19th Avalanche Death in the USA

A 39-year-old snowmobiler from North Dakota was killed by an avalanche yesterday in the Bighorn Mountains of Wyoming.

According to the Sheridan County Coroner, Levi Hammond was thrown from his snowmobile by the avalanche and hit a tree.  The collisions with the tree broke his Levi’s neck.

The avalanche occurred near Hunt Mountain Road near US Highway 14 west of the town of Sheridan.

“A snowmobiler was killed when he was caught in an avalanche in the Big Horn Mountains on Friday afternoon February 19th. Sheridan County Sheriff’s Deputy Mike Mullikin said his department responded to Hunt Mountain Road near US Highway 14 west of Sheridan after being contacted by a group of snowmobilers shortly after noon on Friday. ” – Colorado Avalanche Information Center

This was the 19th avalanche death in the USA this year including 12 in January alone.

This year’s total may rise in USA when two currently missing people are determined to have died form avalanches.  A doctor at Hatcher Pass AK, a ski instructor at Donner Pass, CA.

Last winter, the USA saw only 11 avalanche deaths.

There have been 6 avalanche deaths in Canada this year including 5 dying together in an avalanche last week in Canada.

  1. why do you keep reporting on snowmobile accidents. I mean, who really cares what a lot of motor heads are up to or what they bring down on their heads? It’s not information; it’s just gore. and brain clutter. you continue to hit the low points of mountain adventure.
