The shock opening of Cerro Catedral in Argentina on Friday meant that there were ski resorts open in fifteen countries across four continents in both the northern and southern hemispheres this weekend.
According to In The Snow, there were 150 ski areas open in the northern hemisphere, with Cerro Catedral the only resort in the southern hemisphere. The ski season in South America usually begins in June.
In Europe, forty ski resorts were open in twelve countries (Austria, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Italy, Norway, Serbia, Slovakia, Sweden, Switzerland, and Turkey). In North America, there were 35 ski areas open. Many ski areas had their closing days on Sunday, May 1st.
Japan also has several ski resorts open, including Niseko, thanks to the vast amount of snow the mountains get.
