The US Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA) has just made a powerful discovery that the outdoor recreation industry is now worth 862 billion dollars. The outdoor industry is worth more than the oil and gas industry by almost 750 billion dollars but it doesn’t just provide for the economy it provides an additional 4.5 million jobs.

These numbers show more than just outdoor recreation doing well. It shows that people are getting healthier mentally and physically by getting out of their houses and camping in their local regional or national parks. Craig Kirby, president and CEO of the RV Industry Association added, “The RV industry has seen a record number of younger and more diverse customers flock to RVs as a way to fulfill their desire to get outdoors, take part in all kinds of outdoor recreation, and live an active outdoor lifestyle.” Kirby provides valuable statistics about the future of our environment. If young people are intrigued by the outdoors now, we will have a bright future for our climate and could even put climate change to a halt.

“The BEA is putting a lot of emphasis on how important it is to invest in public lands, water, and recreation infrastructure from coast to coast and for recreation activities of all types,” said Jessica Turner, president of Outdoor Recreation Roundtable. The outdoor recreation industry contributes to 1.9% of America’s GDP so all you people renting/buying RVs and camping gear keep doing what you are doing!

These promising statistics are a thing to stay motivated in this everlasting climate battle, but we must keep fighting. If we stop fighting now we will not be able to reverse it and not reversing it leads to an inhabitable planet.
