Park City Mountain Resort, UT, Plans to Replace Cabriolet Lift with New Gondola

The Cabriolet lift at Canyons Village, which has been hauling skiers and riders from the lower parking lot to the base area since 2000, may be making its final laps. According to TownLift, Park City Mountain and the Canyons Village Management Association (CVMA) have announced plans to replace the open-air lift with a fully enclosed gondola.

The proposed upgrade is part of a larger overhaul of the Canyons Village base area, which includes the construction of a five-story parking garage and pedestrian plaza. That garage broke ground this spring and will ultimately hold more than 1,800 vehicles. When completed, it will consolidate surface parking from across the area into the lower Cabriolet lot, significantly increasing the number of skiers and snowboarders who rely on lift access to reach the mountain.

The Cabriolet was originally installed by American Skiing Company in 2000 and could carry up to 3,000 passengers per hour using 40 eight-person cars. While efficient, the lift requires riders to remain standing and offers no protection from the elements. It also isn’t ideal for transporting gear like bikes and there is speculation that the new gondola will have that capability. These drawbacks, combined with the aging system and growing visitor volume, have prompted the decision to pursue a modern replacement.

Park City and CVMA plan to have the new gondola operational for the 2026-27 ski season, taking just a year to complete once the project begins. While final details are still in development, the lift will likely feature larger enclosed cabins and aim to improve year-round functionality and enhance the overall experience.

This new gondola would follow closely behind the Sunrise Gondola, which is slated to open this winter between Canyons Village and Red Pine Lodge. Together, the lifts reflect a broader investment in modernizing resort access and infrastructure.
