Caltrans’ South Lake Tahoe area maintenance crew responded to three large boulders that fell onto U.S. Highway 50 near Echo Summit on Thursday, March 3, 2022.
The estimated weight was 458 tons. The largest was 23 feet long and 14 feet tall.
The crew used about 14 pounds of explosives. Maintenance drilled 25 holes during the overnight and morning hours. Explosive material was poured into the holes, blasting caps put on over the holes, and then connected to wires to ignite the blast.
It was a successful operation!
