It is mid-April and technically just the start of fall in the Southern Hemisphere, but the last few days have made Kiwis wonder if they skipped ahead and straight into winter. The Canterbury region woke up to the coldest day of the year so far, with windchill making residents wonder if it’s time to turn on the heating and bring out the winter bedding and heated blankets.
All resorts in New Zealand have been reporting snowfall, with some in the North Island like Turoa and Whakapapa experiencing a dusting while those in the South Island and particularly the Canterbury region looking more like early winter conditions. With around half a meter (1.6 feet) of snow in Mt. Hutt and Roundhill, you could be forgiven for thinking we are in early July and not April.
