After a series of setbacks over the past few yearsโincluding bushfires, pandemic-related delays, and unpredictable snow conditionsโthis fresh snowfall marks a positive step forward for the small, family-friendly resort nestled in New South Wales’ Snowy Mountains.

Located just 2.5 hours southwest of Canberra, Selwyn sits at a base elevation of 1,492 metres (4,895 feet) and tops out at 1,614 metres (5,295 feet). Its northern position and relatively low altitude make it more vulnerable to warm weather and variable natural snowfall compared to higher-altitude Australian resorts like Perisher and Thredbo.
The 20 centimeters of new snow was delivered by a passing cold front that also brought light snowfalls to other parts of the Snowy Mountains. With snowmaking infrastructure now in place following a multi-year rebuild, the natural snowfall adds to the resortโs preparations to open on schedule for the first time in years.
A Difficult Journey to Reopening
Selwyn has endured one of the most turbulent periods in Australian ski resort history. The devastating 2019/2020 โBlack Summerโ bushfires completely destroyed the resortโs infrastructure. The fires were followed by COVID-19 travel restrictions that prevented any real progress toward reopening for years.
In 2022, Selwynโs long-awaited comeback was delayed againโthis time ironically by too much snow, when an early-season storm in May made the area inaccessible to crews trying to finish critical electrical work. It finally opened in 2023, but unseasonably warm weather in July eroded the snow base and forced the resort to shut down on July 30, just six weeks after it had reopened.
Looking Ahead to Winter 2024
This season, Selwyn is hoping for a clean slate. The new snowfall has lifted spirits for staff and returning guests alike. While 20 centimeters is modest by alpine standards, for Selwyn it is a meaningful signโespecially when paired with clear progress on snowmaking and infrastructure that didnโt exist in earlier years. With more snow in the forecast for the next few days, it looks like Sewlyn will open with a strong base for the 2025 winter. The resortโs June 21 opening will mark a significant milestone, offering a full season of skiing and snowboarding for the first time in nearly five years.
As one of Australiaโs most accessible and affordable snow destinations, Selwyn is popular with first-timers and families. The latest snowfall signals cautious optimismโnot just for the resortโs staff, but for snow lovers across the region who have been waiting patiently for a reliable season at Selwyn.
While more snow will be needed in the coming weeks to build a solid base, the current forecast suggests another cold system could pass through mid-June, possibly delivering another snow event before opening day.
