[PHOTOS] September Snowfall in the European Alps

Fresh snow blanketed parts of the Alps on Friday, September 5, with resorts above 2,000 meters (6,562 feet) waking up to a first taste of winter. While it is still summer in Europe, the early September storm brought a clear reminder that “Winter is coming,” in the words of John Snow. Many high-lying Alpine resorts saw snowfalls from Tignes and Val Thorens in France, to Sölden and Pitztal in Austria.

While it may still be a while until the ski season starts in most resorts, a handful of glacier resorts are slated to open this month. Val Senales/Schnalstal in South Tyrol, Italy, will open on September 19, while the Pitztaler Gletscher, which will join the Indy Pass for the 2025–26 season, is set to open on September 27, giving Indy Pass holders an early opportunity to ski and ride in Europe as autumn turns to winter. The Hintertux Glacier, which closed temporarily, will also reopen in September.
