Purpose:

This summer we have had the opportunity to test and review the Pro-Tec Shovelhead 2 full face helmet. This helmet doesn’t break the budget, retailing for $129.95 USD but is a very solid and stylish looking helmet.

The Front and Rear of the helmet have smooth contours good venting.

Materials and Method:

The first impressions have been obtained through a few days in the Whistler Mountain Bike Park and regular out-of-the-box inspection. The helmet has been compared with a Specialized Dissident and helmets more comparable to the Shovelhead 2 in regards to price range.

Observations:

This helmet has a comfortable fit and comes down to the perfect level (about one in above the brow) on the forehead making it a stable, safe feeling helmet. It has many features that my regular Dissident helmet has but without the bells and whistles. The build quality is expectedly less robust and less solid than a multi hundred dollar helmet but will definitely do it’s job in the case of a crash. Not only is it a decent fit, but also looks great. It’s one of the best looking helmets I have seen in this price range and would look great in an all black race kit or neutral among other colours. The D-Clip chin strap system works very well and is easily tightened for quick adjustments. The removable padding is ideal for easy washing.

Conclusion:

After the first few rides and initial inspection, the Shovelhead 2 has potential as a great helmet for the price range it falls under. It looks nearly as good as a high end, three to four hundred dollar helmet and still has the same features that many higher end helmets do but without the bells and whistles. It may not take the same beating, or be as light as others, but this helmet is still comfortable, looks good, and has the basic features that you really need. Anyone shopping in this price range should consider this helmet as it could be one of the best options.
