With the Fourth of July approaching, skiers and snowboarders are preparing for the annual pilgrimage to Breckenridge’s Fourth of July Bowl, where the tradition of Colorado summer skiing continues. However, this year, The Peak 10 Classic, a longstanding free event on Independence Day, introduces a significant change: a required registration system, reports Summit Daily.
“Change is inevitable – especially when you’re trying to keep a free, high-alpine ski event alive on public lands. What hasn’t changed is the mission: Keep skiing alive on the 4th of July. Keep it free. Keep it for the people.”
– Peak 10 Classic statement
For the first time in the event’s history, participants must register online to secure a shuttle spot from Beaver Run Resort to the base of the Fourth of July Bowl. While the shuttle remains free, attendees must select a specific time slot during registration and are urged to arrive within their chosen window to ensure smooth operations. The shuttle service will operate continuously from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., accommodating the expected surge of visitors for the holiday celebration.
Organizers are encouraging the use of alternative transportation methods due to anticipated high traffic. Bike parking and other non-motorized transport options will be available at the Overlook drop zone, helping to alleviate congestion and preserve the event’s open, community-driven atmosphere.
The event’s core remains unchanged: a challenging two-mile, 1,500-vertical-foot hike from the shuttle drop-off to the bowl. Participants are advised to bring backpacks for their gear, along with food and water. Helmets and appropriate mountain equipment are strongly recommended to ensure safety on the variable alpine terrain.
After the on-mountain festivities, the tradition continues at Broken Compass Brewing on Airport Road, where the after party will feature live music from local band CB3, food trucks, a custom Peak 10 Classic beer, and thousands of dollars in giveaways. The event remains free, with all fundraising proceeds supporting The Peak 10 Classic Foundation and Friends of Dillon Ranger District.
Volunteers, especially those with medical certifications, are still needed to help keep the day safe and enjoyable. Organizers emphasize the importance of punctuality for shuttle times and encourage anyone interested in volunteering to reach out directly.
