Rock and Ice is reporting that climber and all around badass, Niels Tietze, has died in a rappelling accident in Yosemite National Park on November 16th. He was only 31 years old, and the third son from the same family that perished at a young age.

I had not heard of Niels before coming across the news of his death, and after reading the article it’s clear that we lost not only an accomplished climber, but a well-rounded and extremely interesting person.

He was a member of YOSAR (Yosemite Search and Rescue) and has a long list of climbing feats in the iconic park. Beyond that, he was known for first ascents and conquering big walls around the world.

Rock climbing was not Niels’ only passion. As a certified ophthalmic technician, he worked tirelessly to provide care to people in remote regions of Africa. This will undoubtedly be remembered as the most important contribution of his life

RIP Niels!!
