The search for 79-year-old Margaret “Elaine” McKinley, who went missing during a hike in Windy Hill Open Space Preserve, continued into its fourth day on Sunday, with no confirmed sightings reported. McKinley, a Redwood City resident with dementia, was last seen around noon on Thursday while hiking the Lost Trail with her family, NBC Bay Area reports. She became separated from the group and has not been seen since. She was wearing a red jacket and black pants at the time of her disappearance.
More than 150 search and rescue personnel from multiple counties, including Alameda, Marin, and Santa Clara, have joined the effort. NBC Bay reports that the search has covered approximately 3,000 miles on foot and by vehicle. Resources deployed include drones, K-9 units, horses, bicycles, and aircraft equipped with heat-sensing technology .
The San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office has asked residents near the preserve to review their security camera footage from 10 a.m. Thursday onward and report any potential sightings or relevant information via an online form. Even the absence of sightings can assist in narrowing the search area. The Windy Hill Open Space Preserve remains open to the public, though the parking lot off Portola Road is closed to facilitate search operations. Visitors are advised to expect increased law enforcement presence and to exercise caution in the area.
Anyone with information is urged to call 911 immediately.
