Search for Solo Extreme Climber Missing in the Alps Abandoned After 12 Days

Extreme climber Kai Mosbacher has been missing in the Austrian Alps for over a week. Mosbacher, who hails from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, was last seen on September 8, when he sent a selfie from the summit of Schwarzkopf at 3,174 meters (10,413 feet) in Austria.When the 62-year-old failed to return or respond to messages, a friend notified authorities, triggering a large-scale search operation.

According to Austrian mountain rescue authorities, Mosbacher was making a solo trek in the Ankogel group on the border of Carinthia and Salzburg. He left the Hannoverhaus hut at 2,565 meters (8,415 feet) and noted in the hut book that he intended to head toward the Ali-Lanti Bivouac at 2,663 meters (8,737 feet). But the exact route he planned to take afterward is unknown. Rescuers from both Carinthia and Salzburg have been combing the Ankogel region. Helicopters and ground teams have scoured possible routes, including huts along his expected path and alpine terrain around Schwarzkopf. As many as 45 emergency personnel have been involved in the search. So far, though, all flights and on-ground expeditions have failed to locate him. 

Mosbacher is no casual climber, he has summited more than 5,500 peaks—among them 40 4,000+ peaks and 16 6,000+ peaks. He was allegedly in the pursuit of reaching his 6,000th peak this year. Known by some as “Steppenwolf,” he prefers solitary ascents, often using minimal gear—camping in tents or winter shelters. He has been open about living with Asperger’s Syndrome, which, he says, heightens his desire for quiet and isolation rather than crowds or rigid rules. 

Search operations will only resume if new evidence can be obtained. Authorities are urging anyone with recent sightings, photos, or information about his intended route to come forward.

Mosbacher’s last sign of life was at 5 p.m. from the Schwarzkopf peak on September 9. He is described as 1.90 meter (6 feet 2) tall and very slim with long brown hair.
