UPDATE: 4/09/2019 – Garfield County sheriff’s office says the two missing hikers, a 26-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, were found safe at about 10:45 pm Monday after being reported missing earlier in the day in a remote area near Escalante.

Garfield County sheriff’s office public information officer Denise Dastrup says the two reportedly went hiking together in the upper Escalante River area. The man and woman dropped their car off Sunday at a trailhead and were hiking from an area in Escalante back to their car.

One of the couple’s parents reported them overdue after they failed to return home when expected.

Details of how they were found were not immediately available.

Crews Monday evening were searching for a couple overdue from a hike in Garfield County, Utah. The man and woman, in their 20s, dropped their car off Sunday at a trailhead and were hiking from an area in Escalante back to their car, Garfield County sheriff’s information officer Denise Dastrup told ABC.

One of the couple’s parents reported them overdue about noon Monday, Dastrup said, after they failed to arrive at their destination in Salt Lake City when expected. The man and woman are experienced hikers, according to Dastrup.

Crews Monday were focusing on the upper Escalante River area and were expected to continue the search into the night as long as it remained safe, Dastrup said.

A Department of Public Safety helicopter was also aiding in the search.
