On September 9th, Ski Portillo Chile closed for the 2018 season due to low snow conditions. Last week, a large storm was forecasted to hit the area, but it didn’t materialize. After that, Ski Portillo Chile was able to remain open for a week before they had to give in to mother nature.

“From Ski Portillo Chile we thank all our friends for their visits and support during this season. We hope to see you again next year! #Onlyinportillo,” stated Ski Portillo Chile on their Facebook page.

Sadly, Las Leñas Resort in Argentina closed for the 2018 season early due to low snow conditions and persistently warm temperatures. Despite the resorts arsenal of 40 snow guns, temperatures stayed above freezing, which withheld them from making snow to extend the season. They closed on Saturday, September 8th.

“Thank you for another season full of joys! The weather accompanies us here. See you season 2019! #Lasleñas,” stated Las Leñas on their Facebook Page.

Overall, the Central Andes experienced a very dry winter season in 2018. In the last 10 years, Ski Portillo Chile and Las Leñas have closed early more often than not. This is not surprising, considering the fact that the Latitude of Ski Portillo Chile is very similar to that of Tijuana, Mexico.
