A 52-year-old man from Oceanside, CA, died Thursday after being discovered upside down and unconscious in deep snow on Mammoth Mountain.

The man was found at noon by other skiers and snowboarders who attempted to dig him out while calling ski patrol. He was at the intersection of Hully Gully and Redwing.

Ski patrol tried to revive the man, who was unconscious and did not have a pulse, using CPR and defibrillator shocks. They continued CPR until the man was transferred to an ambulance, and medics took him to Mammoth Hospital. Doctors at the hospital pronounced him dead. The cause of death is under investigation.

Mammoth Mountain received more than seven feet of snow between Tuesday and noon Thursday.

  1. Not surprising, especially in the trees in places, the snow can be much deeper than the nominal snowfall.

I about died upside down in a tree well off of Lincoln Mtn. No joke…
