A skier died on Aspen Mountain on Friday, December 19, after colliding with a tree, according to a statement from Aspen One, the company that operates the resort.
Aspen One said the skier was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident and was transported to Aspen Valley Health Hospital and Medical Center, where they later died. No additional details about the incident were released. “Our deepest condolences are with the guest’s family and friends during this incredibly difficult time,” Aspen One said in a statement to The Aspen Times. “We are truly sorry for their loss. We’d also like to thank our highly trained Ski Patrol for their swift and professional response.”
The company declined to identify the skier or provide information about their age, hometown, the specific location of the accident, or the exact cause of death, citing a longstanding policy of not releasing personal details in cases involving skiing fatalities. The Pitkin County Coroner’s Office said it is investigating the incident and will not issue a statement until the investigation is complete and all relevant information has been reviewed.
Aspen Mountain, one of four ski areas operated by Aspen Snowmass, is known for its steep terrain and challenging runs. Fatal accidents on ski slopes remain rare, but collisions with fixed objects, such as trees, are among the most serious risks for skiers and riders.
