Skier Dies in Avalanche in Chile Today After Heavy Snowfall

The Cronica Chillan newpaper is reporting that a 23-year old Viña del Mar, Chile named Luciano Cueneo Olhaberry died today from injuries suffered in an avalanche in the backcountry near the Nevados de Chillan ski resort in Chile.

Luciano was skiing out of bounds with a foreigner who was reportedly also caught in the avalanche but escaped uninjured and was able to notify rescuers.  Ski patrollers were able to locate the buried skier within 50 minutes of the avalanche.  Luciano was not carry an avalanche transceiver, nor probe, nor shovel.

Luciano was transported to a local hospital in Chillan, Chile but died in the hospital from his injuries suffered in the avalanche and severe hypothermia.

Luciano may have survived had he been wearing an avalanche transceiver. 

Nevados de Chillan has been receiving snow almost daily for the past week with a foot of new snow falling on August 2nd.

  1. Avalanches can occur inbounds too , always wear an avalanche transceiver, carry a probe and shovel and know how to use them
