A guest at Grand Targhee ski resort, WY was very lucky yesterday.

“A guest got VERY lucky yesterday! Ducking rope lines is extremely dangerous. A cornice is an overhanging edge of snow on a ridge or crest of a mountain. They are extremely dangerous and can break unexpectedly.

Stay safe out there, read signs, and don’t duck rope lines! @ Grand Targhee Resort”

It appears that the person walked out onto an enormous cornice and then fell through that cornice.

It appears that the person likely partially fell through the cornice, caught themselves, then was able to escape back to the safe side of the rope.

Had that person continued falling they may have died as a person did back in February 2016.

Again, please, don’t ever duck ropes at ski resorts, this is why rope lines to exist:  to save your life.

The consequence of falling through this cornice was likely fatal as it has been in the past. image: grand targhee
