Olympic snowboard champion Anna Gasser required immediate surgery after dislocating her shoulder in a recent surfing accident in Munich, Germany. The injury, which occurred on an artificial wave, means the Austrian will miss summer training.
Gasser, 33, confirmed the incident on her social media: “Crazy how everything can change in a second. Had a freak accident surfing and dislocated my shoulder. Decided to fix it right away to be 100% again for next season.” The two-time Olympic Big Air gold medalist expressed disappointment at the forced pause but remains focused on a full recovery and return to competition.
“The examinations showed that the shoulder was briefly dislocated. The labrum and biceps tendon were affected. The surgery restored the necessary stability in the shoulder.”
Medical evaluations revealed that Gasser suffered a labral tear and damage to her biceps tendon. The surgery, performed last week, was deemed successful, but the healing process is expected to take several weeks to months. As a result, Gasser has canceled her planned snow training in Australia and will instead focus her rehabilitation and preparations in Europe.
Despite the setback, Gasser’s sights remain set on defending her title at the 2026 Olympic Winter Games in Milano Cortina. She stated that patience will be key as she recovers, but plans to resume training and compete in select World Cup events ahead of the Games.
