An active winter storm is on track to deliver widespread snow to Utahโs mountains from midweek onward, with snow levels starting high before crashing down as colder air filters in. Expect moderate-quality snow early in the storm, followed by fluffier accumulations toward the weekend as temperatures drop. Overall, look for respectable totals across the Cottonwoods and southern Utah mountains, with a continued stormy pattern into the weekend.
Monday through Tuesday will remain generally quiet. Mild daytime temperatures and mostly clear skies will dominate these first couple of days, with no new snowfall expected. Snow surfaces will likely soften under the warming sun, and overnight refreezes may be minimal. This lull sets the stage for a more significant pattern shift beginning midweek.
WednesdayโThursday Storm will kick off with higher snow levels around 6,500โ7,000 feet on Wednesday, meaning early precipitation may come in a bit heavy. Snow should quickly develop in the mountains, with strong gusty southwest winds impacting exposed ridges. As Thursday progresses, snowfall will continue and amounts will rapidly add up, though snow quality will remain in the moderate range (SLRs mostly below 14:1) until a strong cold front arrives late Thursday. By Thursday night, snow levels will drop sharply to near 3000 feet, bringing colder temperatures and potentially better snow density heading into Friday.
Friday into the Weekend will feature colder conditions and persistent mountain snowfall. In many spots, SLRs will climb above 14:1 by Friday, translating to lighter, fluffier snow that should enhance ski conditions. Totals of one to two feet are likely in favored areas, particularly the Cottonwood Canyons and places like Brian Head farther south. Additional pulses of energy may keep light snow going through Saturday and possibly into Sunday, continuing a wintry feel and providing extra accumulations in select mountain areas.
