The New Zealand snow forecast favors a widespread Wednesday night through Thursday refresh, led by 18-26 cm at Mt. Hutt and 8-23 cm elsewhere. Most South Island ski areas have current lift-served operations, while Turoa and Whakapapa were weather-closed Monday, so check their daily reports before expecting lift access.
Tuesday and most of Wednesday should stay largely dry before snow reaches Otago on Wednesday evening, Canterbury around midnight, and Ruapehu on Thursday morning. Guidance agrees on the broad timing and widespread nature of the storm. Snow levels initially sit near 1,300-1,400 meters over the South Island and around 1,700 meters on Ruapehu, then fall below most base elevations as precipitation strengthens.
The heaviest burst lands overnight Wednesday into Thursday, with the strongest focus over Mt. Hutt and a solid refresh extending from Porters through the southern mountains. Temperatures fall between −3°C and −6°C at many resort elevations, supporting moderate to locally light snow in Canterbury, while lower Queenstown slopes and the early Ruapehu accumulation should be somewhat denser. Forecast spread is wider around Mount Dobson and Queenstown than at Porters and Mt. Hutt, but every major model supports accumulating snow.
Most South Island snow fades Thursday night, but Ruapehu continues through Friday as winds ramp sharply. Gusts could approach 120 km/h on Ruapehu and 80-90 km/h around exposed Otago terrain, potentially forcing lift holds and redistributing the new snow. A few light showers may return to parts of the South Island Saturday night and Sunday. Guidance also signals a potentially larger storm around Wednesday through Friday next week, although the GFS is much more aggressive than the other models, making firm totals premature.
