This NZ snow forecast puts a 20-40 cm midweek refresh across much of the South Island, followed by a smaller, windier Ruapehu phase through Sunday. All ten mountains currently report some lift-served operations. Porters says Monday could be its final operating day because of thin lower-mountain coverage, so do not count on lift access there when the new snow arrives.
Snow develops around Otago on Wednesday morning, reaches Canterbury later Wednesday, and largely clears the South Island during Thursday. Guidance agrees on this timing and widespread accumulation, with the most uncertainty around how the heaviest snow divides between Queenstown, Wānaka, and Canterbury. Snow levels begin near 1,600-1,800 meters, allowing dense snow or a brief mix around lower bases, then fall below 600-1,000 meters as temperatures drop. Most of the later accumulation should have moderate quality and preserve well into Thursday, although early gusts near 70 km/h may affect exposed Mt. Hutt lifts.
The focus shifts to Ruapehu from Thursday night into Sunday, but confidence is lower because guidance ranges from a glancing blow to a substantially wetter outcome. Turoa carries a committed 12-21 cm, while Whakapapa receives 6-10 cm. Snow levels generally remain around 1,700-2,000 meters while precipitation is falling, temperatures hover near freezing, and low snow ratios favor dense accumulation. Gusts could approach 120 km/h at Turoa and 75 km/h at Whakapapa, making wind holds and redistribution of the new snow realistic concerns.
A colder but less certain disturbance may return from Monday night through Wednesday next week. Most guidance supports at least a modest South Island refresh before some snow reaches Ruapehu, but the track and scale remain unsettled. The ECMWF is notably snowier around Otago than the other guidance, so this later signal is worth watching without committing to totals yet.
