This New Zealand snow forecast centers on a sharp Monday night through Wednesday cold change, with Mt. Hutt favored for roughly 15-25 cm and lighter but useful refreshes elsewhere. The storm starts wet and wind-affected in the Southern Lakes, turns progressively colder, then finishes with the best snow quality in Canterbury and on Mt. Ruapehu.

Northwest wind strengthens Monday before precipitation reaches The Remarkables around 8 p.m. and spreads across the Southern Lakes during the evening. Gusts can exceed 100 km/h on exposed terrain before easing, creating a risk of lift disruption. Snow levels initially sit near 1,400-1,700 meters, so lower slopes may see rain or very dense snow before the snow line drops below 1,000 meters early Tuesday. The models agree on the rapid cooling but differ considerably on how much moisture survives, making timing more certain than totals.

Canterbury is the standout as snow begins around Mt. Hutt and Porters early Tuesday, pauses during the afternoon, then reloads Tuesday night into Wednesday. Snow levels fall from around 1,600 meters at onset to near 700 meters by Tuesday morning and around 400 meters during Wednesday’s colder wave. The later snow should be lighter and better preserved than the initial accumulation. Confidence in this sequence is solid through Wednesday night, although the range between wetter and drier solutions remains meaningful. Porters has closed for the season, while Mount Dobson’s scheduled final operating day is Sunday, so their incoming snow will not provide a lift-served opportunity during this storm.

Mt. Ruapehu’s next round arrives Tuesday afternoon and becomes colder and steadier through Wednesday. Whakapapa is currently limited to lower-mountain lifts, while Turoa has broader lift access, making available terrain an important part of the chase. Snow tapers Wednesday night as temperatures remain well below freezing. Another potentially stronger system is signaled for next weekend, but the models disagree sharply on its track and scale, so detailed totals are premature.
