A snowmobiler was killed Monday afternoon after being buried in an avalanche near Johnson Peak and Castle Peak west of Truckee, California, according to the Nevada County Sheriff’s Office. Castle Peak is located just north of Boreal, Soda Springs, Sugar Bowl, and Tahoe Donner ski areas.

Authorities said the avalanche occurred around 2:19 p.m. after Washoe County’s 911 center relayed a call reporting a slide involving a group of snowmobilers, with one initially unaccounted for. Roughly 45 emergency responders were dispatched to the area, including teams from Truckee Fire, North Tahoe Fire, Nevada County Search and Rescue, and Tahoe Nordic Search and Rescue.

Mutual aid helicopter support was unavailable due to weather or operational constraints, officials said. Three SnoCats, three snowmobile teams, and several ski teams were deployed in the rescue effort.

The missing snowmobiler was located several minutes later by others in the group and recovered from beneath the snow. Despite lifesaving attempts on scene, he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released pending next of kin notification.

The scene remains active as search and rescue personnel work to confirm no other individuals are missing and to extract the victim safely. Officials warned that further avalanche activity is possible and urged recreationists to avoid the Castle Peak region until conditions stabilize.

The Nevada County Sheriff’s Office expressed condolences to the victim’s family and thanked the multi-agency teams involved in the coordinated response. No further details on the accident’s size or specifics are currently available.

Avalanche danger in the Tahoe area has been heightened by recent storms, heavy snowfall, and fluctuating temperatures, which have contributed to unstable snowpack across the Sierra Nevada. The Sierra Avalanche Center’s forecast for the region on Monday listed considerable avalanche danger at and above treeline, warning, “The recent winter storm is winding down with increasing strong winds today. Unstable snow is expected in areas where slabs of wind-drifted snow have formed, along with dry loose sluffs in more wind-protected terrain. Recreating on lower-angle slopes out of the wind can help reduce the risk of being caught in an avalanche today.”

The fatality is the third in the United States this winter and the fourth in North America.
