More than two weeks after cutting short her preseason training camp in Argentina and setting off a wave of speculation in the Italian press, Sofia Goggia’s mystery ailment has finally been diagnosed. The Italian ski star as well as the Italian Winter Sports Federation (FISI) have confirmed on September 25 that Goggia has completed a series of in-depth clinical examinations at La Madonnina private clinic and the IRCCS San Raffaele Hospital in Milan. The tests found two separate viral infections that, combined, amplified each other’s effects, resulting in what FIS described as “a significant state of physical debilitation.”

According to FISI, Goggia has already begun a recovery program developed in collaboration with the FISI Medical Commission, chaired by Dr. Andrea Panzeri — the same doctor who was also involved in her leg fracture last year. Dr. Panzeri has been coordinating her care from the moment the Italian ski racer returned from Argentina.

Shortly after the FISI statement, Goggia posted on social media for the first time since August 22 — ending an uncharacteristic silence that had spurred rumors about her well being across Italian newspapers. “Ushuaia 2026 🇦🇷, short, intense and not easy trip,” the Italian speed specialist started before adding that while she was sorry to leave, she was pleased with her progress in the first week. She went on to express her gratitude to the medical team looking after her and explained her illness as well with “two viral infections that gave me ‘particular’ symptoms.” She admits that the infections have debilitated her quite a bit but she stays positive, finishing with “nec recisa recedit,” which is Latin for  “though cut down, she does not retreat.” It is a fitting note for a champion known as much for her resilience as her results. Goggia famously won a World Cup race in St. Moritz, Switzerland, just one day after breaking her hand

While Goggia’s own message is cautiously optimism, no timeline has been provided for Goggia’s return to snow. The World Cup opener in Sōlden, Austria, is only four weeks away, so it is currently not certain she will compete. Considering Goggia is more of a speed specialist who does compete in some giant slalom races, missing the season opener would not be out of character considering it is a giant slalom race.
