Solitude Mountain Resort—one of Salt Lake City’s best ski areas—has postponed its opening date of Nov. 20 to a later date.

The later date has yet to be announced but will be updated as soon as it’s shared by the resort.

Solitude shared in a social media post

“While we had hoped to have our lifts spinning on Nov 20, we have decided to postpone our opening date. The extra time, and a little help from Mother Nature, will give us a chance to prepare ample terrain for skiers and riders to spread out, creating the best mountain experience for all of our guests. Stay tuned for a new opening date, coming soon!”

The update came less than 24 hours after Utah’s Gov. Gary Herbert declared a state of emergency and issued a statewide mask mandate amid a recent surge in coronavirus cases.

“Due to the alarming rate of COVID infections within our state, tonight I issued a new state of emergency with several critical changes to our response. These changes are not shutting down our economy, but are absolutely necessary to save lives and hospital capacity.”

– Gov. Gary Herbert

Herbert was quick to state that the restrictions, which will begin today through Nov. 23(although the mask mandate is indefinite), will not shut down the economy. On the eve of the ski season, he made sure to confirm that Utahns can still shop, dine in or carry out, exercise, worship and recreate, and many other things.

As the snow continues to fall and all of our stoke levels teeter towards overflow, we can only keep our fingers crossed that Utah’s ski season will start swiftly and smoothly this year.
